Hungary's new government has allowed the unblocking of €6.6 billion in EU aid for weapons to Ukraine

On this, the portal “TVP World” writes on Wednesday.

This turn marks an important change in Budapest’s foreign policy, with the previous Viktor Orbán administration using the requirement of unanimous approval to block the European Peace Facility (EPF), thus causing a delay in more than 40 billion euros in pending compensations.

Such a delay angered major donor countries like Germany and the Netherlands and forced the EU to seek alternative ways to ensure that Ukraine continued to receive important arms shipments at a time when the threat posed by Russian forces was growing.

Budapest’s decision to lift the veto on the EPF – a non-budgetary EU funding mechanism that compensates countries for about 40% of the value of weapons sent to Ukraine – immediately frees up 6.6 billion euros in compensations, with more funds expected later.

EU officials are now tasked with completing the protocols for fund allocation and future application submissions. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha has urged EU partners to take advantage of the newly available compensations and purchase air defense systems from the US under NATO’s Priority Needs List (PURL) program.

The change in position is part of broader efforts by Hungary’s new Prime Minister Péter Magyar to reset relations with the EU, NATO, and Ukraine.
