French Prime Minister calls a new emergency meeting on forest fire response

After the previous meeting, held on Friday evening, more troops and a military firefighting aircraft were sent to the fire-ravaged region near Bordeaux.

Large fires have been raging in France for two or three days, exhausting hundreds of firefighters working around the clock.

France has mobilized its army to help the exhausted firefighters.

French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez stated earlier on Saturday that the fires in France have devastated almost 98,000 hectares – which, he said, is a “historic record”. The devastated area is almost 10 times larger than the city of Paris.

So far, there have been no reports of civilian deaths, but two French firefighters died near Bordeaux earlier this week.
