The incident occurred after L. Hamilton’s fast lap, when he slowed down on the racing line, and O. Piastri, who was starting his final attempt behind him, was forced to go wide and abandon his lap. The stewards decided that the Briton unnecessarily impeded his rival, and therefore imposed the standard three-place penalty.
After qualifying, Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur took responsibility, stating that L. Hamilton was informed too late about the approaching O. Piastri, and therefore the fault lies with the team, not the driver himself. L. Hamilton also emphasized that the incident was not intentional.
“If a mistake was made here, it was our mistake. We informed Lewis about the approaching car much too late,” said F. Vasseur.
“I was only informed about Piastri when he was already very close. I had no idea he was approaching. I thought everyone had already finished their laps. Obviously, it wasn’t intentional,” said L. Hamilton.
Mercedes driver and Formula 1 championship leader Kimi Antonelli received a three-place grid penalty after Hungarian GP qualifying for not sufficiently slowing down in a yellow flag zone.
The Italian had secured fourth place in qualifying, but during his final attempt, in the last corner, he passed the spot where Max Verstappen had stopped off-track after a spin. The stewards determined that although K. Antonelli briefly lifted off the throttle, the speed reduction was insufficient – he even passed the incident spot slightly faster than on his previous fast lap.
Due to this penalty, K. Antonelli will drop from fourth to seventh on the grid. He also received one penalty point on his superlicence.
The stewards noted that such an infringement typically incurs a five-place penalty, but decided to reduce it to three, as the driver did attempt to slow down and had little time to react to the yellow flags.
