ECtHR condemned Serbia for banning protest against Chinese President Xi Jinping

The Serbia-China Friendship Association FDH appealed to the Strasbourg court after being prevented from holding a demonstration in 2016 to support the spiritual movement “Falun Gong,” which is banned in China.

The demonstration was banned on the grounds of a threat to public order, but the court ruling stated that this reason was speculative and Serbia violated Article 11 of the European Convention on Human Rights regarding freedom of expression.

Xi Jinping’s visit to Serbia in 2016 was the first visit by the Chinese leader in more than three decades to one of China’s closest allies in Europe.

Xi Jinping visited the country again in 2024, and Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić went to Beijing last week.
