Dream job in the Alps? Tenant wanted for a cabin at 1571 m altitude

Buchsteinhaus stands at 1571 meters high in the Ennstal Alps, Styria. This mountain refuge was built in 1924 by the Naturfreunde Steyr organization, and since then it has provided accommodation for mountain enthusiasts of all ages. The hut operates from May to October and also has a winter room.

A new tenant is sought for the upcoming season. “One of the most beautiful terraces in Styria is looking for a new owner from 2027,” it says on Facebook. The current hut owner is ending operations after five years.

Business high in the mountains

There are three shared rooms with 12 beds each, one room with 8 beds, and one room with 6 beds for guests here. If water runs out, the shower is closed.

Technically, the hut has been continuously modernized, writes the Austrian portal 5min. It is equipped with a photovoltaic system, modern water supply, and sewage treatment. In addition, Buchsteinhaus is awarded an environmental label.

The new tenants’ duties would be to take care of the guests, maintain the hut, use resources sustainably, and familiarize visitors with the national park’s behavior rules. The hut is accessible only on foot, but tenants are allowed to drive up to the lower station of the freight lift by car.

The rental contract should be concluded for several years, with the lease starting in January 2027. The contract provides for a fixed rent. Investments and maintenance work should be coordinated with Naturfreunde. Applications can be submitted until August 14, 2026.

“We invest our money, but in the end, nothing remains”

Managing a mountain hut is not necessarily a profitable business. For example, the Potschacher family ended the catering operation of the Zwieselalm hut near Bad Reichenhall this summer.

“We put in our salaries, but in the end, nothing remains,” described the situation Andi Potschacher.

“We took over this alm in 2018 and managed it as a mountain inn – not as a main job, but out of passion. However, gradually we reached the limit. Unfortunately, in recent years it has become increasingly difficult to keep this place alive,” he explained on Facebook.
