As promised, Mindaugas Balčiūnas officially announced on Monday that he is stepping down from the position of president of the “Lithuanian Basketball” association.
From Tuesday, the association’s general secretary Dominykas Domarkas will take over his powers until the early elections. This was confirmed to “Basketnews” journalist Lukas Malinauskas by D. Domarkas himself.
“The main task is to organize an extraordinary election conference and ensure the smooth operation of the association until the new president is elected,” said D. Domarkas.
The 34-year-old former basketball player, who represented more than ten Lithuanian and foreign teams during his career, has been working as general secretary since September 2024, when M. Balčiūnas won the association elections, having previously served as general secretary under Vydas Gedvilas.
49-year-old M. Balčiūnas announced his decision to resign from the position of president of the “Lithuanian Basketball” association last Friday on his Facebook page.
Recently, M. Balčiūnas was actively criticized by basketball personalities and fans, mainly due to the decision in the case of the former coach of the women’s basketball national team, Rimantas Grigas, when the association conducted an investigation into possible harassment of players for only a few days, issuing only a warning to the coach, although the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) conducted the investigation for more than a year and imposed a very strict penalty on R. Grigas.

On Thursday, an Executive Committee meeting will be held, where the date for the extraordinary conference and elections will be set, and an interim president of “Lithuanian Basketball” will be appointed.
As 15min wrote on Friday, LKL president Remigijus Milašius is invited to become the interim president.
D. Domarkas is expected to remain general secretary until the new elections, which should take place in a couple of months.
