“Approximately 30 calls to incidents at the moment, but they are increasing,” said Saulius Raščevskis, a specialist at the Situation Coordination Department of the Fire Protection and Rescue Department (PAGD), to BNS around 9 p.m.
According to him, the most affected part is southern Lithuania – most reports are recorded in the municipalities of Lazdijai district, Druskininkai, Varėna district, and Prienai district. A few calls were received from Širvintos and Vilkaviškis districts.
“Most of the trees fallen on the road carriageway or power lines are being removed, a few are on cars. We are responding to incidents,” said the PAGD specialist.
According to the “Energy Distribution Operator” (ESO) outage map data, about 3 thousand residents currently have no electricity in the country due to disruptions, with 62 disruptions recorded.
According to the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service (LHMT) data at 9:10 p.m., the main storm clouds are moving over Alytus and Vilnius counties.
According to meteorologists, in the coming hours the zone of heavy rain will move east and weaken. Short rains with thunder are expected in places, heavy rain in some areas, possible squall wind intensifications up to 15–18 m/s, hail.
The service warns of possible difficult traffic conditions due to rain, short-term road flooding, tree branch breakage due to wind, and electricity supply disruptions.
LHMT meteorologist Simona Dalinkevičiūtė said earlier on Thursday that such summer storms may become more frequent in the future, and residents and municipalities will have to adapt to more frequent extreme weather.
