For the 30-year-old Dutchman, this is the third career victory against a Top 5 opponent and the third time he has managed to defeat the German tennis star.
T. Griekspoor arrived in Canada having won only once in his last eight matches, but this streak did not prevent him from shocking one of the best players on the planet with aggressive play.
“This is one of my most important victories. This season has been very tough for me, and at times I even thought about quitting. However, recently I have been working very hard in training and showing an increasingly better level of play. I felt it was only a matter of time before the wins returned,” the Dutchman rejoiced.
However, Sascha Zverev’s withdrawal was not the only surprise on Wednesday – three more Top 10 players left the tournament.
Initially, the biggest hope of the hosts, Felix Auger-Aliassime (ATP-4), withdrew from Montreal due to a back injury.
Then, sensationally, the ATP 500 series Washington champion Taylor Fritz (ATP-8) also fell. The American lost 5:7, 3:6 to Argentina’s Thiago Agustin Tirante (ATP-65).
The surprise-filled day in Montreal ended with the defeat of the representative of the occupying country, Daniil Medvedev (ATP-6). The Russian lost 3:6, 6:7(5) to the Dutch Botic Van De Zandschulp (ATP-70).
Of the seven Top 10 players who started in Canada, only two reached the third round – defending champion Ben Shelton (ATP-10) and Alex De Minaur (ATP-7).
