After record heat in Europe – message from climatologist: changes await in Lithuania

“The calendar summer has begun and, as if on cue, it has really warmed up (even at night), although on the morning of June 1st, light frosts were still recorded in some places,” notes G. Stankūnavičius.

According to him, this year’s spring was quite contrasting. After an extremely dry and sunny March, a cool and dry April followed, causing an early drought. In May, the situation changed – in parts of the country the drought ended due to active atmospheric fronts, but frosts returned in mid-month.

Much attention was also drawn to the records that hit Western Europe at the end of May. According to the climatologist, they were caused by the so-called heat dome – a high-altitude anticyclone that brought unusually early and far north extremely hot weather.

“This time, due to anomalous large-scale air flows and quite unseasonally, such a heat ‘cap’ settled over the western part of Europe,” explains G. Stankūnavičius.

Because of this phenomenon, many temperature records were recorded. In western Ireland, the temperature rose to 30.6 degrees, in London to 35.1, in Wales to 32.9 degrees Celsius. In some parts of France, thermometers showed 37–39 degrees, and in central Portugal, the temperature reached as high as 40 degrees.

However, such heatwaves do not threaten Lithuania.

“Extreme heat did not reach our region, nor was it forecasted, and it is not expected in the coming weeks,” says G. Stankūnavičius.

Weather in the coming days

In the coming days, Lithuania will remain moderately warm. On Thursday, temperatures will rise to 19–24 degrees, and on Friday, short showers and thunderstorms are expected in some places. More rain is expected over the weekend due to the influence of a cyclone forming over Poland.

Sunday, according to the meteorologist, will be the warmest and most pleasant day of the weekend – mostly dry and sunny, with temperatures rising to 21–26 degrees.

The meteorologist also points out that at the beginning of next week, a new heat wave will again reach Southwestern Europe. Meanwhile, June in Lithuania is expected to be slightly warmer than usual, with precipitation forecasted to be below the long-term average.
