„It was very hot, so it was hard to run. And at the beginning, there were a lot of hills,“ said A. Ardzijauskas, who covered almost 90 km in California under scorching 26-degree heat. But the experienced runner, who expects even higher temperatures in the US deserts, knows how to run in such conditions.

„Running in long sleeves is the main trick to overcoming the heat. You need to cover your skin, not undress. When less body fluids evaporate, you can run longer in the heat. And you need to drink more,“ shared A. Ardzijauskas with his advice.
He aims to run 100 km per day, but so far has not been able to achieve this.
„The best plan is to have no plan, that’s the plan we follow,“ smiled Aidas. We run as much as we can and see how it goes. Still, the body has to get used to the changing weather conditions: hot during the day, windy in the evening. Such differences require a lot of energy.“

And Aidas does not expect the third day to be easy, as he will have to get through the city of Sacramento. „Until we run out of these big cities, it will be very hard. And when there is nothing – just the road and me – it will be very simple. But you have to wait, you need patience. So far, I haven’t been able to accumulate those kilometers, but I said from the start that the beginning would be the hardest.“

On the route, A. Ardzijauskas also encountered unexpected obstacles: „One section got stuck where all the roadsides were littered with tomatoes. It was difficult to run there. Very narrow road, many cars, and you also have to watch your step so you don’t slip. But there were also sections where it was very good to run.“
A. Ardzijauskas aims to run across America in honor of President Valdas Adamkus and Lithuanian unity. On November 3, V. Adamkus, who became a symbol of Lithuanian unity worldwide through his life and work, will celebrate his 100th birthday.
For this occasion, A. Ardzijauskas plans to run from the West Coast to the East, from San Francisco, through Denver and Chicago, all the way to Washington, visiting Lithuanian communities and covering more than 5,000 kilometers in total.
