The Lithuanian gas transmission system operator “Amber Grid,” which initiated the public opinion survey, emphasizes that hydrogen is no longer a vision of the distant future. The company, together with partners from five European countries, is currently designing the North and Baltic countries’ hydrogen corridor – an approximately 2,500-kilometer-long international pipeline that will connect Finland, the Baltic countries, Poland, and Germany, allowing the export of surplus energy produced from solar and wind in our region to major European industrial centers. Recognized as a strategic priority by the European Union, the project marks a tectonic shift across the entire energy sector – it is estimated that as much as 70% of all new European gas infrastructure projects already consist of hydrogen initiatives.

A representative public opinion survey commissioned by “Amber Grid” and conducted by “Spinter tyrimai” showed that even 75% of those aware of hydrogen support the development of this modern energy type in Lithuania and its export. However, the survey also revealed that the general public’s basic knowledge about hydrogen is insufficient or even incorrect.
Think they know, but are mistaken
The survey revealed that 52% of the country’s residents openly admit to knowing nothing about green hydrogen – regardless of gender, income level, place of residence, occupation, or age. Those with sufficient knowledge account for 10% of the population, while 38% say they know what it is but not enough to judge its benefits or drawbacks.
However, 4 out of 10 respondents who claim to know what hydrogen is are guided by incorrect assumptions. One-fifth of them believe that hydrogen is extracted from underground deposits – like oil or natural gas, and a similar proportion is convinced that such a substance does not exist in nature at all and was created artificially.
“As long as hydrogen is only a strategic direction, general approval is enough – emotional support is a great start. But when moving to actual production and infrastructure work, gaps in basic knowledge quickly fill with unfounded fears. The public certainly does not need deep technological knowledge, but it is our duty as the energy sector to simply answer essential safety and benefit questions,” emphasizes Nemunas Biknius, CEO of “Amber Grid.”

Why produce the most abundant element in the Universe?
Physically, hydrogen is a gas. Although it is the most abundant element in the Universe, this gas does not exist in pure form on Earth – hydrogen is always combined with other elements, for example, in water or organic compounds. To use hydrogen in industry, energy, or transport, it must be “freed” by separating it from other chemical compounds. Various technological processes are used for this, so it is said that hydrogen is produced.

Green hydrogen acts as a “storage” of clean energy
Hydrogen has been used in industry for decades as a raw material, for example, in fertilizer production, but until now, it was mostly produced from fossil natural gas. Today’s technological breakthrough is associated precisely with green hydrogen. It is produced by water electrolysis, using only renewable solar and wind electricity – the water molecule is split into hydrogen and oxygen.
Green hydrogen acts as a “storage” of clean energy: it allows excess solar and wind electricity to be converted into gas, which can be stored for a long time, transported via main gas pipelines, and used where electricity alone is insufficient – decarbonizing heavy transport, industry, or exporting to other countries.
A representative public opinion survey was conducted by the public opinion and market research company “Spinter tyrimai” on behalf of AB “Amber Grid” from May 27 to June 7, 2026. During the survey, 1006 respondents aged 18 to 75 across Lithuania were interviewed using the CAWI (online survey) method. The margin of error of the survey results does not exceed 3.1%.
