4.8 magnitude earthquake in Spain: 3 people injured

A new earthquake shook this southern Spanish city just a few days after somewhat stronger underground shocks.

According to the National Geographic Institute, the earthquake occurred at about 10:38 a.m. local time (11:38 a.m. Lithuanian time), with its epicenter in the town of Alhendín, located 10 km south of Granada.

Antonio Sanzas, the chief emergency official of the Andalusian region, reported that three people were lightly injured, including a girl who was taken to the hospital.

Rescue services indicated they received more than 50 calls reporting cracks in buildings and falling debris.

Videos posted on social media show debris scattered in the streets of the popular tourist city and damaged cars.

“Everything just collapsed. It was scary,” wrote Cristina Ruiz Lopez, a laboratory worker who was in a shopping center in Granada during the earthquake, on the social network X.

The Granada municipal police urged people to stay away from buildings due to the danger of falling debris.

On Saturday, shortly after 1 a.m., a 5-magnitude earthquake frightened the residents of Granada.

No casualties were reported from that quake, probably because there were fewer people on the streets at that time, although damage to some buildings was reported.

“Experts note that seismic activity and repeated shocks may continue in this area,” wrote the regional government leader Juan Manuel Moreno on the social network X, urging “the utmost caution.”

The Alhambra Palace stands in Granada – a medieval Islamic architectural masterpiece listed by UNESCO and the last capital of the Muslim kingdom in Spain.

The Alhambra’s Alcazaba, a historic fortress and the oldest part of the complex, was evacuated after the earthquake, and access to the Nasrid Palaces was no longer possible, the complex’s X account reported.

It was added that specialist teams, assisted by experts from the University of Granada, are inspecting the complex.
