More often sick – vitamin C
The growing child’s body needs a lot of energy, so all accumulated vitamin reserves can run out much faster than in an adult. Even if fresh, organic garden and orchard produce delighted us in the summer, they do not always provide enough nutrients for the child for a long time. And when the new school year begins, it is equally important to additionally take care of the children’s nervous system,” advises the pharmacist.
For children prone to frequent illness, it is useful to additionally take vitamin C. It regulates the immune and nervous system functions, supports normal energy metabolism, and reduces fatigue.
Moreover, vitamin C protects against free radicals and helps protect cells from oxidative damage. It also helps absorb iron, promotes wound healing, strengthens teeth, bones, and capillary walls.

“Happiness vitamin”
It is no coincidence that vitamin D is also called the happiness vitamin. It contributes not only to the nervous system function but also generally improves the child’s health condition. “This vitamin helps brain function, strengthens immunity, and is necessary for proper bone and muscle work. In addition, vitamin D improves the absorption of calcium, zinc, and phosphorus in the body, which leads to healthy bone and teeth development,” lists E. Ramaškienė.
B group vitamins
B group vitamins are among the most necessary for the developing body, and the benefits of each are explained.
“Vitamins B6 and B12 contribute to healthy nervous system function and red blood cell production, while also reducing feelings of fatigue. At the start of the school year, pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) is also useful – it is essential for energy metabolism and supporting mental activity. Meanwhile, vitamin B2 and biotin support normal skin and hair condition,” says the pharmacist.
The importance of calcium and magnesium
For the rapidly growing body, according to the pharmacist, calcium is also essential. It helps maintain healthy bones and teeth in the child, participates in muscle and nervous system function, blood clotting, energy metabolism, and is also responsible for digestive enzyme activity.
“For older children, it is worth supplementing the body with magnesium because its deficiency can cause cramps or increased irritability. This element not only helps muscles function properly but also strengthens the nervous system, which can help the child concentrate and calm down more easily as tests approach,” explains E. Ramaškienė.
Fish oils and their alternative forms
Fish oils are well known as immune system protectors. However, they also strengthen children’s nervous systems, support brain function, and are important for vision and proper heart function.
The pharmacist notes that children often avoid regular fish oils because of the taste, but more suitable alternatives for children can be found on the market.
“If a child does not want to take regular vitamins, other forms can be tried – for example, sprays or gummies, which children usually like more. Often, gummies contain a small amount of sugar, or there are also dietary supplement options on the market that contain only natural sugar,” mentions E. Ramaškienė.
