Like many other European car manufacturers facing difficulties, Opel is expanding its partnership with Leapmotor to create a new SUV by leveraging the Chinese company’s experience in electric vehicles and low-cost manufacturing processes, while leaving more traditional car design tasks to local Opel engineers.
Opel’s parent company Stellantis announced in April that it will lay off 650 engineers out of a total of 1650 employees at its Rüsselsheim development center, in response to a wave of job cuts affecting the entire German automotive industry. These changes have caused concern in this city, where Opel was once a powerful engine of prosperity. Company leaders say they are trying to adapt to the reality – fierce global competition.
