“Considering that there are signals regarding the situation at the Lithuanian Embassy in the United States, concerning Ambassador G. Varvuolis’s working style, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is forming a commission to assess the current situation and then decide what to do next,” said the Chairman of the Seimas Foreign Affairs Committee (URK), social democrat Remigijus Motuzas, to BNS on Wednesday.

According to him, if information about the negative activities of an institution subordinate to the ministry appears in the media or public space, the institution must form a commission within five working days to assess the situation.
Among other things, at the end of August, a meeting of the Foreign Affairs Committee will be held, where the leadership of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will provide information about the current situation.
“Considering that some members of the Foreign Affairs Committee, parliamentarians, publicly express their opinions and comment on the current situation, which does not always correspond to reality, we have scheduled to invite the ministry’s leadership to the Foreign Affairs Committee on August 26, who will provide information about the current situation and the conclusions of the mentioned commission,” he emphasized.
He spoke this way after BNS announced on Wednesday that representatives of the Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats (TS-LKD) are trying to hold informal talks to discuss Ambassador G. Varvuolis’s work.
According to BNS information, the invitation from the Vice-Chairman of the Seimas Foreign Affairs Committee Žygimantas Pavilionis and former Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė to talk with TS-LKD members reached the entire embassy staff, using certain personnel members to disseminate the information.

Ž. Pavilionis confirmed to BNS that he communicates with embassy employees. Among other things, during the talks, they have mentioned G. Varvuolis’s work; I. Šimonytė stated that she has not directly communicated with those working at the Lithuanian representation in Washington for a long time.
The portal “Delfi” reported last week that some embassy employees contacted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reporting disrespectful behavior by the ambassador, raised voice, and long working hours.
“Delfi” sources indicated that employees also spoke remotely with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ general inspector, and there was allegedly a conversation with the ministry’s chancellor, who promised specific decisions to address this situation, but an investigation regarding the ambassador was not initiated.
G. Varvuolis has been serving as Lithuania’s ambassador to the USA since August 1 of last year.
