N. Pashinyan clarified that the signed statement has already been handed over to the President of Armenia, Vahagn Khachaturyan.
Formal resignation
The government’s resignation is formal in nature and is provided for in the Constitution of Armenia. According to this document, after the first session of the newly elected National Assembly, the acting cabinet of ministers must resign to initiate the procedure for forming a new government.
Meanwhile, all cabinet members continue to perform their duties until the new composition is approved. The president, in turn, upon the new parliament starting work, must immediately appoint a prime minister candidate nominated by the parliamentary majority.
The elections to the National Assembly of Armenia were held on June 7. Their results showed that Nikol Pashinyan’s party “Civil Contract” received 49.74% of the votes (64 mandates), the “Strong Armenia” bloc got 23.27% (29 mandates), the “Armenia” alliance – 9.92% (12 mandates).
Other opposition parties did not pass the electoral threshold. Having a parliamentary majority, “Civil Contract” gained the right to independently form a new government.
