In the first quarter of this year, general government revenue in the euro area amounted to 47,1 percent of GDP. Compared to 47,3 percent in the fourth quarter of last year, this decrease was mainly due to a small seasonally adjusted increase in general government revenue in absolute terms (approximately 1 billion euros) being offset by nominal GDP growth. General government expenditure in the euro area amounted to 50,2 percent of GDP – less than in the previous quarter (50,4 percent of GDP), and this change was driven by a decrease in seasonally adjusted general government expenditure of approximately 1 billion euros and nominal GDP growth.

In the first quarter of this year, general government revenue in the EU amounted to 46,6 percent of GDP. This indicator decreased compared to 46,7 percent recorded in the fourth quarter of 2025. Seasonally adjusted total revenue in the EU increased by approximately 9 billion euros compared to the fourth quarter of 2025. General government expenditure in the EU amounted to 49,8 percent of GDP, which is less than 50,1 percent of GDP in the previous quarter. Seasonally adjusted total expenditure decreased by approximately 2 billion euros compared to the previous quarter.
