In a recent study, adults who went to bed even slightly later than usual every night for six weeks but woke up at the same time gained an average of about 0.45 kg.
Although such weight gain may seem small, it is important to consider that it occurred over a relatively short period, says the lead author of the study, Marie-Pierre St-Onge, a professor of nutritional medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York.

Study participants slept about 80 minutes less each night than usual. If this pattern continued for a whole year, it could mean more than 3.5 kg of additional weight for some people – which is considered clinically significant weight gain.
