“The history of this homestead begins with my parents, who lived here in Karklė. Back then it looked completely different, my parents lived agriculturally, keeping many animals. After my father passed away, my mother was the last in the village to sell a cow, so the meadows remained empty,” says Aušra.

The coin that changed everything
It is believed that the house where Aušra lived since childhood was built as early as 1908 and was the old Karklė school.
“In East Prussia, there was a very interesting education system – so that schools would not have to be built, they subsidized large farmers (because only they had big houses) to give half of their house to the school. Our current living room was a classroom, and on the other side was the teacher’s room, because at that time the teacher lived in the schools,” the interlocutor explains.

The history of the homestead taken over by Aušra to maintain began by hosting friends and relatives for rest, until finally Aušra decided to put these meadows to work – she reconstructed a log cabin, built three gazebos, and established a campsite. There is only one cabin on the homestead, built in 2012, where people can stay for a peaceful rest. According to the owner, there used to be an old fisherman’s cabin in this place, and when moles started to come through the floor, it had to be renovated.
