The good news is that most of the time it is not difficult to determine the cause. Here are the five most common reasons why cucumbers do not bear fruit and what you can do to change the situation.

1. The plant is still only flowering with male flowers
Most cucumber varieties first produce male flowers. They usually appear one to two weeks earlier than the female ones and are much more numerous – about three male flowers per one female flower.
Male flowers are easy to recognize – they grow on longer, thinner stalks, and inside you can see stamens with pollen. Female flowers have a small swelling underneath, resembling a miniature cucumber.
How to solve it? If the first flowers do not set fruit, there is no need to worry. This is a completely natural stage of plant development. Under suitable conditions, female flowers will soon appear, from which the crop will form.
2. Unsuitable weather conditions
Cool and rainy weather reduces the activity of bees and bumblebees, so flowers remain unpollinated. However, the problem can also arise in the opposite case – prolonged heat can also cause cucumbers to stop setting fruit.
How to solve it? On hot days, water the plants daily and try to maintain even soil moisture. If the cause is cool or rainy weather, patience is the only option – when the weather improves, healthy plants usually recover quickly and start bearing fruit.
3. Lack of pollination
Cucumbers are mostly pollinated by bees and bumblebees. If there are few of them in the garden, flowers may remain unpollinated and fruits will not form.
This can happen if there are almost no flowering plants in the yard, only lawn prevails, or broad-spectrum insecticides have recently been used.

How to solve it? If there are not enough insects, cucumbers can be pollinated by hand. In the morning, when the flowers are open, use a soft brush or simply a picked male flower to transfer pollen to the stigma of the female flower.
It is important to know that each cucumber flower is open only for a few morning hours, so do not delay.
4. Uneven watering
Like many other plants, cucumbers are sensitive to stress. If the soil is waterlogged one time and completely dry the next, the plant may drop flowers to save energy. Even if fruits set, they are often bitter.
How to solve it? Water cucumbers regularly. They need at least 2.5 cm of water per week, and even more in hot weather or when grown in pots. Before watering, check soil moisture with your finger or use a moisture meter.
5. Too much nitrogen fertilizer
Cucumbers like nutritious soil and need nitrogen, but excess nitrogen promotes leaf growth rather than fruit. In this case, the plant looks lush, but there is almost no harvest.
How to solve it? If you suspect you have over-fertilized with nitrogen, water the soil abundantly – this will wash out some of the excess nutrients. If possible, carefully mix some fresh soil around the plant to reduce nitrogen concentration without damaging the roots.
When the plant recovers, fertilize with balanced vegetable fertilizers. Additionally, every 3–4 weeks you can use a very small amount of pure nitrogen fertilizer, for example, about one teaspoon of blood meal per plant. But the most important thing is not to overdose, as excess nitrogen will again promote leaf growth instead of fruit.
