Two robot “arms” – more thorough cleaning
The new “Xiaomi Robot Vacuum H50 Pro”, costing about 419 euros, is significantly cheaper than last year’s technologically advanced “Xiaomi Robot Vacuum 5 Pro” which currently sells for about 549 euros. However, the new “H50 Pro” model should not be considered a simpler version of the more expensive model. When developing the “Xiaomi Robot Vacuum H50 Pro”, more attention was paid not to object recognition and identification, but to the floor cleaning mechanics, so that the robot would not leave uncleaned areas, and that after its work, there would be no regrets that not everything was cleaned.
The problem with disc-shaped robot vacuum cleaners is inherent in their form: such a robot easily rotates, changes direction, and rarely gets stuck between furniture, but it struggles to clean room corners. Manufacturers try to solve this problem by choosing longer side brushes, but even they do not always reach all places.
The mechanics of the “Xiaomi Robot Vacuum H50 Pro” solve the problem differently: as the robot approaches a corner, the brush mechanism extends towards the wall and sweeps away all dirt. One of the two rotating floor mopping pads works on a similar principle: when needed, it also extends from the robot’s body, allowing this robot to mop floors right along baseboards, around furniture legs, and under low edges of furniture or household appliances. If the gap height is at least 2.8 cm, a mop can already be inserted into it, although the entire robot does not fit under such a low gap. Therefore, the “Xiaomi Robot Vacuum H50 Pro” cleans floors well near kitchen cabinets, refrigerators, or doors. By the way, compared to other “Xiaomi Robot Vacuum” series devices, the mop extension distance has been increased by 68%.
The mop mechanism can also dynamically adapt to irregular surfaces: when moving around a round table leg, a wavy wall, or an uneven baseboard, the robot automatically adjusts the position of the extended mop to minimize the gap between it and the obstacle. This solves a common problem for many robots, where a relatively large uncleaned area is left near complex-shaped furniture or walls.
Powerful 15,000 Pa suction system
The “Xiaomi Robot Vacuum H50 Pro” has a suction power of 15,000 Pa. Nowadays, much more expensive, higher-end robots have greater suction power, but is it always necessary to look for a robot with the highest possible suction power? High suction power is important for cleaning carpets, but dust, crumbs, and other dirt on smooth, hard floors are also picked up by lower-power robots. Operating in standard suction and mopping mode, the “Xiaomi Robot Vacuum H50 Pro” robot collects more than 99% of larger particles from hard floors. For daily cleaning of hard floors, the standard mode will usually suffice, while the maximum power mode is worth choosing for cleaning carpets or heavily soiled areas.
Hair tangles less around brushes
One of the most unpleasant maintenance procedures for robot vacuum cleaners is removing hair tangled around the main brush axis. If there is a pet in the house, after a few cleanings, the brush of many robots has to be removed, and the tangled hair cut with scissors. The “Xiaomi Robot Vacuum H50 Pro” has double protection against hair entanglement: there are Y-shaped combs near the main brush that trap and separate hair, and the main brush is designed to accumulate as little hair as possible at both ends. The side brush is also protected from hair: its double spiral design directs hair towards the suction port instead of wrapping it around the brush axis.
How are floors mopped?
The “Xiaomi Robot Vacuum H50 Pro” floor mopping pads rotate at 180 rpm. This mopping principle better removes dried coffee drops, dirt marks, etc. The high-speed rotating pads wipe the same spot many times, thus cleaning dirt more intensively.
The “Xiaomi Robot Vacuum H50 Pro” has a carpet detection sensor, so when it drives onto a carpet, the suction power is automatically increased, and both mopping pads are lifted 10 mm upwards. A 10 mm lift of the pads is sufficient for most thin and medium-thickness carpets. The pads are also lifted when the robot returns to the station, so that dirty and wet pads do not drag across already cleaned floors.
Laser navigation and obstacle detection
The “Xiaomi Robot Vacuum H50 Pro” navigation is based on the LDS laser system. The laser on top of the robot scans the environment at 360°, measures distances to walls, furniture, and other objects, and creates a map of the premises. The first time, the robot scans the home very quickly, and in the “Xiaomi Home” app, you will immediately see a map of your home and be able to divide rooms into zones, marking areas where the robot should not go.
The front of the robot is equipped with a 129° field of view obstacle detection system. Even in low light, it detects low objects in front of the robot, so the robot bypasses them. Unlike the “Xiaomi Robot Vacuum 5 Pro” model, the “H50 Pro” does not have an object-identifying camera: it can detect obstacles, but it does not identify whether it is a sock, shoe, toy, or cable. Therefore, before starting the robot, it is still recommended to pick up cables, shoelaces, and other items from the floor that could get caught in the brushes.
The absence of a camera is not necessarily a drawback: some people do not like a device with a video camera moving around their home, even if the manufacturer applies data protection measures.
Multifunctional service station
An important part of the “Xiaomi Robot Vacuum H50 Pro” robot kit is the multifunctional service station. Without it, it would be a powerful vacuuming and mopping robot that would require constant supervision. The station significantly reduces robot maintenance tasks: it transfers dirt from the robot’s dustbin to a disposable dust bag in the station, which should last up to 75 days; the station has a 4-liter tank for clean water and a tank of the same capacity for dirty water, so the robot empties dirty water and refills with clean water there; the robot’s mops are washed and dried in the station.
Battery and operating time
The “Xiaomi Robot Vacuum H50 Pro” has a 5200 mAh battery, which ensures that the robot will operate for about 150 minutes in standard vacuuming and floor mopping mode. However, in reality, the robot returns to the station much more often to deposit collected dirt, replace dirty water with clean, wash the mops, and the battery is always charged during such service, so you will very rarely see a case where the robot returns to the station just to charge the battery.
All settings in the “Xiaomi Home” app
The “Xiaomi Robot Vacuum H50 Pro” is controlled by the “Xiaomi Home” app. It displays the home map, the robot’s traveled route, the cleaned area, and the estimated remaining work time.
In the app, you can select which rooms the robot should clean, set their cleaning order, mark a specific zone and instruct it to clean only that area or, conversely, ignore it. You can create forbidden zones and virtual walls, select suction power, floor mopping intensity, carpet cleaning strategy, and set how often the robot should return to the station to wash the mops.
The robot supports up to ten scheduled cleaning tasks. You can set it to clean the kitchen after breakfast on weekdays, the entire house when residents go to work, and start work later on weekends.
Evaluation
The “Xiaomi Robot Vacuum H50 Pro” does not have cameras and a complex artificial intelligence object recognition system, but it offers what may be more important to many people: effective floor vacuuming and mopping, including all corners, sufficiently high suction power, good navigation, and a high level of autonomy. Considering the price of 419 euros, the “Xiaomi Robot Vacuum H50 Pro” offers a lot.
