As the Police Department duty officers promptly reported on Saturday, on May 30 at about 13:28, in the Neringa municipality, at the 24th km of the scenic Nida–Smiltynė road, a man (born in 1983) traveling by bicycle went off the road and crashed into a tree.

The cyclist died in the traffic accident.
The circumstances are still beginning to be investigated in detail.
The total length of the Smiltynė–Nida trail is about 50 km. Most of it, almost 36 km from Smiltynė to Preila, belongs to AB Lithuanian Road Administration (LAKD), the remaining part to the Neringa municipality.
Some sections of the route have been renovated relatively recently.
The road is exceptionally scenic and very popular with cyclists.
