A tragic accident occurred in the early hours of July 4th, when a 2007-born female driver of a BMW 530e lost control of the car on Žirmūnų Street and crashed into a lighting pole. After the impact, the car broke apart and caught fire. For some time, it burned with open flames.

Two passengers died in the accident – a girl born in 2007 and a boy born in 2005. The driver was taken to the hospital, where she was found to have an alcohol level of 0.58 per mille. The girl was not seriously injured.
As stated, it is suspected that there was a race before the accident.
Almost three weeks later, the accident site is still not cleaned up.
This is what public figure and cycling enthusiast Eduardas Kriščiūnas writes in one of Vilnius’s problem-focused Facebook groups, “WTF, Vilnius? We can definitely do better!”
“Almost 3 weeks have passed since the tragedy on Žirmūnų Street, so perhaps you could at least remove the broken poles, if you are so sensitive and do not enforce the approved cleaning and tidiness rules in the city?
Yesterday I saw 2 elderly women who were indignant about the environment not being cleaned up for so long, and when they saw me taking photos, they asked if I was a journalist and if I could write about it.
Or perhaps this will be some kind of memorial for those who died in the race?” – E. Kriščiūnas wrote, addressing the Vilnius City Municipality.
He also added a point from the Cleaning and Tidiness Rules: “16. Prohibited:

- 16.7. placing flowers, wreaths, and/or candles at sites where people have died. This prohibition does not apply to the owner or other lawful manager of the territory where a person died;”
Comments poured in under the post, most of them directed at the Vilnius Municipality with the question – why isn’t it taking care of things?

Indeed, on Žirmūnų Street, where the terrible accident occurred, broken trees and a fallen pole still remain. The area is cordoned off with stop tape.
However, neither the candles nor the toys, which covered the site of the young people’s death shortly after the accident, are left.
Will clean up after receiving permission
The municipality itself states that it is not its fault that the area is not cleaned up.
“Elements of the accident scene remain at the site of the traffic accident. We understand residents’ questions, therefore, once permission is received from the investigating officer, the elements of the traffic accident will be removed.
The supports will be restored in the near future, and environmental cleanup work will be completed,” the municipality states.
