Wild island where cows protect birds
In the bends of the Nemunas River near Merkinė, late spring brings not only the sound of flowing water or the calls of returning birds. For nine years now, Hereford breed cows have been brought to one of the river islands. To another – a flock of sheep. At first glance, this seems like an old rural custom, but today grazing livestock has become an important conservation measure, helping to preserve rare bird species and the open meadows of the Nemunas.
