During the large-scale war ongoing since February 2022, Ukraine and Russia have repeatedly attacked each other’s ships in the Black Sea – an important waterway for both countries’ exports.
“We do not want the war to spread to the Black Sea,” H. Fidan said at a press conference alongside the head of Ukrainian diplomacy.

“There is simply no explanation why in the 21st century the war in Europe has lasted five years. We need peace more than ever,” he added.
Turkey has hosted several rounds of negotiations between Ukraine and Russia – at the start of the war and in 2025.
Their result was only large-scale prisoner exchanges, which were happening anyway.
Last month, H. Fidan, who met with President Vladimir Putin in Russia, said Turkey is ready to host future negotiations.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha said President Volodymyr Zelensky would be ready to meet with V. Putin in Turkey.
The Kremlin leader has repeatedly rejected the possibility of meeting with V. Zelensky until an agreement to end the war is reached.
US-led negotiations have stalled, and the peace terms of both countries remain very different.
