Tricky is often mentioned among the most famous export names of Bristol – alongside the artist Banksy, the reggae group “Black Roots,” and cider. Growing up in a very dangerous neighborhood, Tricky became one of the most important trip-hop creators, but he never tried to fit into the music industry. Considered one of the best trip-hop albums to date, “Maxinquaye” was a turning point in his career, but Tricky did not chase the fame brought by the album. Instead of choosing popularity, Tricky always took a different path in his career.
At concerts, Tricky sometimes behaves almost antisocially and almost always chooses minimal stage lighting. This relationship with the audience still divides fans into two camps. Even at 58 years old, the short and thin Tricky radiates unpredictable energy that can burst out at any moment.

Tricky recalls how once one of the founders of the famous British music label “Creation Records,” Alan McGee, told him: “You know what I like most about you? You’re not a celebrity.” “I think that’s exactly success – to be able to create what I want and feel the support of people,” says Tricky.
A great example of such creative freedom is the single “Out of Place” from the new album “Different When It’s Silent.” The song made it into the “BBC Radio 6” playlists, although it is quite a melancholic composition without the usual chorus, and no vocals are heard in the first 35 seconds. “This is definitely not a radio song,” Tricky himself is surprised.
The track “Out of Place” is closely related to Tricky’s painful personal experience. “I didn’t understand it before, but many of the lyrics are about my daughter,” says Tricky. A heartbreaking coincidence is that the “Maxinquaye” album is Tricky’s tribute to his mother who voluntarily left life, and “Different When It’s Silent” is for his deceased daughter. Between these two albums lie thirty years of career, a diverse music catalog, much pain, inner transformations, and strong experiences.

Tricky’s music unites three different generations of music lovers. The album “Different When It’s Silent” was released at a time when the world is rediscovering trip-hop. Names from the nineties are now revived on “TikTok,” and the younger generation of creators increasingly adapts their sound to their music. However, Tricky’s connection with the younger generation is not based solely on the returning trip-hop trend. Tricky has never respected genre boundaries, and his music and image have reflected a free approach to self-expression from the very beginning.
On the cover of the 1995 single “Overcome,” Tricky and his creative partner Martina Topley-Bird posed as the bride and groom. Martina wore a top hat and held flowers, while Tricky wore a wedding dress, painted his lips with red lipstick, and held two pistols in his hands. In his autobiography, Tricky says that as a teenager he used to pick dresses from charity shops and wear them to parties. According to Tricky, it was never a conscious attempt to provoke. “If I like a piece of clothing, I don’t even think about which store section it hangs in,” says Tricky.

Although Tricky is inseparable from Bristol music, the artist himself is skeptical about attempts to define music by city or period. “The Bristol sound, the Manchester sound, the Liverpool sound… It’s all just marketing. We are too obsessed with the past,” says Tricky.

“I like what Bristol created, but people tend to live in what happened 30 years ago. Sometimes even those who weren’t around then become obsessed with that period. A talented generation is growing up in Bristol now. I’m more interested in working with new artists than chasing nostalgia. I don’t see anything wrong with admiring the past, but if you get stuck in it too much, there’s simply no future,” says Tricky.
Tricky does not play with nostalgia. He is not afraid to experiment and discovers himself and his creativity anew every time. Tricky can still surprise, and that is something very few can achieve.
This concert tour announced as many as 38 shows across Europe and 17 in North America. The special guest of Tricky’s tour is Polish vocalist Marta Złakowska. Marta has been a close creative partner of Tricky for almost a decade. “The Guardian” called Marta’s voice on Tricky’s album “Fall to Pieces” a unifying grandeur. Marta’s gentle vocals beautifully complement Tricky’s dark sound.
“For a while, I was emotionally paralyzed. Now I’m moving forward again. I’m really looking forward to this big tour. I want to be on stage again,” invites Tricky.
By invitation of the music agency “8 Days A Week,” Jamie Woon, “The Cinematic Orchestra,” “Sleaford Mods,” and “LIFE” will also perform live in Vilnius this season.
