Responding to the climate change service “Copernicus” assessment, the United Nations (UN) warned that as long as humanity does not abandon fossil fuels, the planet will increasingly enter unknown territory.
“Copernicus” observations have been conducted since 1940, but other evidence, such as ice cores, tree rings, and coral skeletons, allow scientists to assess the current climate in a much longer historical context.
“Humanity has not seen such high temperatures as today probably for at least the past 100,000 years,” Samantha Burgess, a representative of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts overseeing “Copernicus,” told the news agency AFP.
