This happened a few hours after President Donald Trump publicly urged him to choose her.
Darline Graham Nordone will serve in the US Senate until the end of L. Graham’s term in January, following the unexpected death of the 71-year-old politician over the weekend.
“I am honored to ask his sister Darline Graham to complete his work,” said H. McMaster announcing the appointment.
“Lindsey always helped me, and now I will help him,” added D. Graham Nordone.
“My brother was an amazing person, a distinguished leader, and simply a good person,” she said.
Recommended by Trump
D. Trump previously recommended D. Graham Nordone for this position, describing the appointment on his platform “Truth Social” as a “wonderful tribute” to L. Graham, known as a foreign policy “hawk” and a close ally of the president.
L. Graham was never married and had no children, maintaining close ties with his sister. Their mother died when he was 20 and D. Graham Nordone was 12; less than two years later, their father also died of a heart attack.
Graham officially adopted his 13-year-old sister
Then 22-year-old L. Graham officially adopted his 13-year-old sister, helped her finish school, and essentially raised her. D. Graham Nordone later recalled that after their father’s death, her brother hugged her and promised to always take care of her.
This appointment is temporary. South Carolina Republicans will hold a special primary on August 11 to select a candidate for the November election, whose winner will begin a full six-year term in the Senate in January.
