The capital’s public interest object development and management company Vilnius Development Company has already selected contractors through public procurement for the reconstruction of the Vilnius Kunigaikščio Gediminas Progymnasium primary education branch (Miglos St. 1A), “Vyturys” primary school (Taikos St. 189), and Šeškinė primary school (Šeškinės St. 15). Construction works on Miglos Street will begin this summer, while works on Taikos and Šeškinės streets are scheduled to start at the end of the year.
The works at the Vilnius Kunigaikščio Gediminas Progymnasium primary education branch on Miglos St. will be carried out by UAB “Infes” for 12.6 million EUR including VAT, “Vyturys” primary school – by UAB “Kalvastos statyba” for 12.6 million EUR including VAT, and Šeškinė primary school – by UAB “KRS” for 11.1 million EUR.
“These schools are three of the six that will fundamentally change in Vilnius over the next two years. The demand for schools in Vilnius is rapidly growing, so along with new projects, we are also increasing the areas of old schools and renovating them. After reconstruction, these schools will become more spacious, functional, sustainable, and meet the modern educational needs of our children,” says Vilnius city mayor Valdas Benkunskas.
Soon it will be revealed who will carry out the reconstruction works of the Vilnius Kunigaikščio Gediminas Progymnasium primary education branch on Blindžių St. 3. Additionally, projects for the renovation of the VGTU Engineering Lyceum branch on Nemenčinės Avenue and Šv. Kristoforo Gymnasium are currently being prepared.
Soon after, two more schools will be reconstructed: architectural project competitions have been announced for Medeina primary school and Simonas Daukantas Progymnasium. It is planned that these fundamentally renovated schools will open their doors in 2030.
“Every school should inspire and motivate a child and be a place where they want to go. To turn this ambition into reality and leave the Soviet-era legacy as just a gloomy memory, Vilnius is not only carrying out new school constructions but also a breakthrough in the reconstruction of existing ones. From the city’s side, we are working so that everyone can enjoy the results of school renovations as soon as possible,” says Vilnius city vice mayor Vytautas Mitalas.

After reconstruction, the branch of the school on Miglos St. will nearly double in size. Šeškinė primary school and the “Vyturys” primary school in Justiniškės will increase about 2.5 times. New annexes will be added to the school buildings, and the old buildings will be fundamentally renovated. Their energy efficiency class will also improve after the renovation – it will be A++. Pedestrian paths and convenient access will be installed on the territories of all three schools, new trees and shrubs will be planted, and existing greenery will be maintained.
“Expanding Vilnius’ educational infrastructure, we focus not only on building new schools or kindergartens but also on transforming existing educational institutions. Reconstructions allow adapting old buildings to today’s needs – increasing their capacity, improving energy efficiency, and creating a modern learning environment. This is an investment in long-term education quality throughout the city,” says Laura Joffė, head of Vilnius Development Company.
Additional classrooms will appear in the reconstructed schools, and not only common areas for various activities and events but also sports facilities will be renovated: sports halls and outdoor fields with basketball and football courts. Outdoor activity zones and terraces are being created next to them.
During the reconstruction of all three schools, students will temporarily study in other premises adapted for learning. Reconstruction works will be completed by the beginning of the 2028 school year.
The reconstruction works of these Vilnius schools are part of the rapid expansion of new educational institutions in Vilnius. According to a special financing model, where institutional banks lend funds for the construction and reconstruction of educational institutions and subsequent real estate management, four new and five old schools are planned to be built and reconstructed in the capital.
