“No reports of casualties or serious, large-scale structural damage have been received. Individual cases of damage are being assessed, especially in vulnerable buildings,” wrote Granada’s mayor Marifran Carazo on the social network “X”.

Andalusian emergency services reported receiving more than 200 calls from across the region, including Seville, Cordoba, and the Costa del Sol coastal resorts.

“Cracks appeared, things like eaves, debris, and walls fell, and damage to some buildings was also reported,” the statement said.

The services urged residents to remain calm and avoid facades, eaves, balconies, and building walls that could collapse, as well as not to enter or leave buildings unnecessarily.

Images released by the Spanish media show debris scattered on the streets of Granada and cars with broken windows.

“We definitely felt the shaking, it was so strong that it woke us up,” Marta Mayorga Fernandez told the public broadcaster RTVE from the town of Huetor Vega, located very close to Granada.

She said she saw “quite a few places where doors were damaged,” and friends shared photos showing items fallen from shelves.

Small earthquakes are not rare in the most densely populated region of Spain, but they rarely reach a strength of 5 on the scale.
