The woman born Davina Sheffield was the granddaughter of Lord McGowan – a Scottish industrialist who led the company Imperial Chemical Industries for two decades. She was also a cousin of Samantha Cameron, the wife of the former British Prime Minister, and the Sheffield family roots go back to the times of King Charles II.
The woman’s romance with the current King Charles III began in 1976, when the then Prince of Wales was deeply impressed by a tall, striking blonde. According to information published on the portal GBNews.com, royal commentators of the time called her the prince’s “soulmate” and said the couple looked “madly in love.”
They were constantly seen at high society gatherings and were often spotted driving around in Charles’s open Aston Martin DB5 Volante. The prince invited her as his guest to a wedding, and she was also photographed sitting next to Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip at an equestrian event.
Charles took the relationship so seriously that he even invited Davina to Balmoral, where she impressed his grandmother, the Queen Mother. One of the deceased’s friends told the Daily Mail: “She and Charles together were simply wonderful.” Royal family biographer Michael Rhodes also described her as a “great match” for the future monarch.
However, the relationship suddenly ended when Davina’s former boyfriend, powerboat racer James Beard, revealed details of their past romance to the media and admitted that they shared a “love nest.”
This disclosure proved fatal. The royal rules of the time strictly required that the heir to the throne marry only a “woman of unblemished reputation.” For this reason, Charles was previously not allowed to marry Camilla Shand (before she married Andrew Parker Bowles in 1973).

In her 2005 book The Firm, royal biographer Penny Junor wrote that D. Morley initially declined Charles’s dinner invitation due to her then relationship with J. Beard, but “the prince was so persistent that she eventually gave in, and her boyfriend soon stepped aside.”
It is said that the future king was devastated by the breakup, especially since Davina had already won his family’s approval.
After this heartbreak, the woman found long-term happiness with Jake Morley, whom she married in 1981 – the same year Charles married Lady Diana Spencer. The couple had three sons: Thomas (b. 1983), William (b. 1984), and Henry (b. 1987). After her death, she also left two stepsons from Jake Morley’s first marriage – Dominic and Sebastian.
Besides personal life intrigues, D. Morley was well known for her charitable work – at the end of the Vietnam War, she went there to volunteer at an orphanage.
The memorial ceremony is planned to be held at her local church in Gloucestershire, about 15 miles from the King’s Highgrove estate, near the Cotswold home she cherished so much.
