Among the weapons planned to be used during the attack were even poisonous gases.
It was also planned to destroy underground cables, blow up bridges and railway lines to paralyze Canada’s infrastructure.
A massive creation of camps where Canadian residents would be interned was also planned. It was expected that Canada would collapse within a few days.
All the above were part of the 1930 US government members’ approved “Red War Plan” (English: War Plan Red).
This name was invented by US military strategists for a secret war plan against the United Kingdom. The red color here symbolized the red uniform historically worn by British soldiers. The attack on Canada was to be an important part of this plan.
However, the “Red War Plan” (full official name – “Joint Army and Navy Basic War Plan – Red”) was never activated, and it never came close to being so.

For most of the last century, relations between Canada and the US were very good, and the “Red War Plan” seemed just like a strange historical detail.
However, recently US-Canada relations have reached their lowest point since 1867, when Canada gained self-government.
