The heir to the throne, 53-year-old Haakon, who served as regent during his father’s illness, automatically became king.

He has already convened the government for a meeting at the palace to officially inform about the monarch’s death.

Then he announced that he chooses the name King Haakon VIII and continues the tradition with the motto, choosing the same one as his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather: “All for Norway”.

Will take the oath in parliament

In the coming days, Haakon VIII will take the oath in parliament. According to the Constitution, he must say the oath: “I promise and swear that I will govern the Kingdom of Norway according to the Constitution and laws. So help me God, Almighty and Omniscient.”

In 1991, King Harald V took the oath four days after the death of his father, King Olav V.

Haakon VIII’s 22-year-old daughter, Princess Ingrid Alexandra, automatically becomes the heir to the throne. If necessary, she can substitute for Haakon VIII in the role of regent.

The date of the king’s funeral has not yet been announced. His father, King Olav V, was buried on January 30, 1991, 13 days after his death.

Haakon VIII, like his father and grandfather, may choose to bless his reign through a ceremony at Trondheim Cathedral, where Norwegian kings were crowned from 1814 to 1906.

The coronation ceremonies were abolished in 1908, but King Olav introduced the consecration tradition in 1958. King Harald V and Queen Sonja were consecrated on June 23, 1991.
