The first drone surveillance systems installed on sections of Estonia's eastern border

In the remaining part of the land border, these systems will be installed during this year.

“The first systems have already been installed and are operational. This is, of course, just the beginning: we are moving towards a nationwide anti-drone network, but this step shows that our preparatory work has paid off,” said Interior Minister Igor Taro (Igoris Taras) in a ministry statement. “Recent drone incidents prove that we realistically assessed the threats and made well-thought-out decisions when planning our capabilities. Our eastern border is well protected, and this strengthening of anti-drone capabilities increases the security of all Europe.”

“I am confident that our border surveillance capabilities are improving every day. Work is ongoing, construction continues, and our border protection is reliable and constantly strengthening,” said I. Taro.

The state is currently purchasing surveillance equipment for other border sections. Construction and preparatory work are proceeding on schedule or even ahead of it. The contractor has committed to completing work on 9–10 border sections between Koidula and Satsė by the end of the year, although the contract allows for several more months.

“This is another good example of how properly planning important work can lead to fast and quality results,” said I. Taro.

The construction of the eastern border and the strengthening of drone surveillance capabilities are jointly funded by the European Union (EU).

After inspecting the border construction, I. Taro also met with representatives of the Setomaa municipality to discuss issues related to managing queues at the border.
