On August 17, the department completed the inspection of the Klaipėda Zoo and handed over the inspection report to the responsible persons.

It states that during the established one-year period, while the Decision to prohibit visitors from entering the zoo was in effect, the Klaipėda Zoo did not eliminate the identified violations and did not take the mandatory measures. Proper conditions for keeping and exhibiting animals, veterinary care, and biosecurity requirements were not ensured. Also, feeding and watering according to the species’ needs, nutritional requirements, animal welfare, and visitor safety were not guaranteed.

Responsible persons will be held administratively liable for the identified violations in accordance with the procedure established by legal acts.

On Wednesday, the department, within its competence, transferred documents and information to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) necessary for the decision on the cancellation of the validity of the permit issued to Klaipėda Zoo to establish a zoo and for the closure of the zoo.

The decision on the validity of the permit is a matter of institutional competence, but no less important is what happens next. Currently, essential attention must be paid to the welfare of the animals living there – this is a process that requires careful work and cannot be rushed or postponed.

At the same time, it should be noted that the duty to properly care for the animals – ensuring their keeping conditions, feeding, watering, and veterinary care – lies with the zoo operator and does not end with the decision to cancel the permit’s validity. The responsible institutions will monitor compliance with these requirements throughout the transition period.
