The royal palace announced on Friday morning that King Harald V of Norway, the oldest reigning European monarch, has died at the age of 90.
“With deep sadness, we announce that His Majesty King Harald has died today. King Harald passed away peacefully at Oslo University Hospital on Friday, August 28, at 6:35 a.m. (local time, 7:35 a.m. Lithuanian time),” the statement said.
At the royal palace in Oslo, the flag was lowered to half-mast, reported an AFP news agency reporter at the scene.
Harald V had been treated at Oslo hospital since August 17, where he was admitted due to hemolytic anemia – a condition caused by the unusually rapid destruction of red blood cells, resulting in fatigue and shortness of breath.

The royal family rushed to his bedside on Thursday when the palace announced that Harald’s condition was critical.
His wife Queen Sonja, Haakon, and his wife Mette-Marit, along with their adult children, spent most of Thursday by his bedside, and the media reported that Haakon stayed overnight.
The date of the king’s funeral has not yet been announced. His father, King Olav V, was buried on January 30, 1991, 13 days after his death.
