“When judges are threatened for applying laws, the danger arises to the international legal order itself,” the court emphasized in a press release.
Earlier on Tuesday, the US imposed sanctions on WTO chairwoman Tomoko Akane from Japan. This move is part of a campaign against the institution, which the US accuses of being “politicized.”
Washington also imposed sanctions on senior WTO prosecutor Abdoulaye Seye from Senegal. This is the latest attack by the Trump administration against the court based in The Hague.
“Measures targeting judges, prosecutors, and staff working to fulfill the mandate given to the WTO by states undermine the rule of law,” the WTO responded.

The court based in The Hague stated that it remains undisturbed and “firmly supports its staff and the victims of unimaginable atrocities.”
The US, which is not a party to the international treaty establishing the WTO, has previously imposed sanctions on several officials of this court.
These measures prohibit them from entering the US and conducting operations within the American financial system.
This is mainly a response to WTO investigations targeting the US ally Israel. In 2024, the court issued an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the war in the Gaza Strip.
