The international tender for the purchase of the observation wheel and its maintenance was announced at the end of last year, and on April 14 this year, the public institution “Kaunas IN” signed a contract worth 4.6 million euros for the purchase of a 45-meter-high observation wheel with at least 32 gondolas after the competition was completed.

The observation wheel was planned to be built this autumn.
In the summer, the Kaunas council approved even the prices for how much it will cost city residents to ride the wheel, but where the service will be provided – the municipality publicly claims it has not decided yet.
Concrete works heated up on Nemunas Island
However, the construction works that suddenly started on Nemunas Island in July raised a mystery – whether here, without receiving heritage protection approval and publicly stating that only engineering works for the improvement of pedestrian paths are being carried out, which do not require a building permit, an observation wheel will appear?

As first reported by the news portal “Kas vyksta Kaune,” about 15-meter-deep piles and approximately 150 sq. m of concrete foundations were installed as part of the works on Nemunas Island.
The works started without a building permit (according to Kaunas municipality, it is not required for such works), and the State Territorial Planning and Construction Inspectorate (Construction Inspectorate), having received complaints, has already conducted an inspection at the construction site.

Mandatory instructions were promised to be given to the entities responsible for the construction.
