Ramūnas Navickas, director of the Varėna district municipality fire protection service, informed 15min that a multitude of trees have been simply swept away on the road connecting Merkinė, Puvočiai, and Marcinkonys.
“The storm hit very hard – the Marcinkonys-Puvočiai-Merkinė road is closed (…) This entire road is blocked by trees – definitely not just a few, we can count in kilometers,” said R. Navickas.

According to him, at least four firefighter-rescuer teams are currently removing the trees. Some are working from the Merkinė side, others from Marcinkonys.
The Varėna fire chief shared photos from the scene.
It is already dark there, but it is possible to see that the scene is terrible, although obviously, it looks even worse in person.
