“Last night, the Varėna district, like many places in Lithuania, was hit by a storm.
The hardest hit was the village of Puodžiai in the Jakėnai eldership. Strong winds tore off the roofs of several residential houses and industrial buildings, knocked down numerous trees, and some residents were left without electricity – power lines were cut, and trees hung on them,” the municipality states.

It is reported that the Varėna district municipality’s fire service teams worked throughout the night.
<p“They removed about 70 fallen trees, most of which were blocking roads. The Žilinai team removed about 30 trees, the Gudžiai team about 20, and the Valkininkai team another 20. Prompt work allowed traffic to be restored on the main roads.The agricultural company “Tėviškė” has been helping to clear the storm’s aftermath since early morning. This is not the first time the company has extended a helping hand to the district’s people.
The situation is currently being assessed. In some places, road embankment washouts near culverts have been recorded, and the road owner – AB “Kelių priežiūra” – has been informed about them. Storm damage removal work continues, cooperating with ESO and other responsible services to restore electricity supply,” the municipality reports.

The administration of Varėna district municipality thanks the firefighters, eldership employees, ESO specialists, and residents who did not remain indifferent, help each other, and contribute to the elimination of the consequences.
“If there are still dangerously hanging trees or power lines around you, please do not approach them and report the danger to the responsible services,” the municipality adds.
