Representatives of Western countries at the meeting included former UK National Security Adviser Tim Barrow, former German State Secretary and European Union (EU) Ambassador to Russia Markus Ederer, and longtime French and EU diplomat Pierre Vimont.
However, Bloomberg sources refused to name the former Kremlin official who participated in the meeting.

Such meetings, often called informal or backchannel diplomacy, allow former officials and policy experts to explore possible conflict resolution methods without obliging their governments to adhere to a specific position. Later, participants can share their assessments with current officials.
The Kremlin has not publicly commented on reports about the discussions in Vienna.
