Party leader, Jonava district mayor Mindaugas Sinkevičius stated this week that he intends to present three scenarios for the future of the coalition to party members during the council meeting.

Although the party leader did not elaborate on them, the social democrats had previously modeled three possible scenarios: continuing to work in the current coalition, replacing the “aušriečiai” (dawnists) with democrats, or working in a minority.

In addition, this week LRT television, citing social democrats who spoke on condition of anonymity, announced that the question of the future of Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys in his position might also be decided on Saturday.

President Gitanas Nausėda stated that talking about changing Lithuania’s head of diplomacy is “not very responsible and not very serious,” while Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė affirmed her trust in K. Budrys and believes he is doing a good job.

A few weeks ago, M. Sinkevičius told “Lietuvos rytas” television that he missed the foreign minister’s resolve to better respond to social democratic policies, but K. Budrys’s future in the post is not being discussed because of this.

As BNS wrote, discussions about reviewing the coalition were prompted some time ago by the “Nemuno aušra” (Nemunas Dawn) representatives’ vote against the establishment of the Kapčiamiestis training ground.

Some social democrats do not hide their dissatisfaction that the “aušriečiai” leader sharply criticizes some of their ministers, his behavior and speeches cause resonance in society, and he has also been convicted of antisemitism by a first-instance court.

The LSDP council will also discuss political current affairs and preparations for next year’s municipal elections on Saturday.

After the 2024 Seimas elections, the social democrats had formed a ruling coalition with “Nemuno aušra” and the democrats, but last autumn they reorganized the majority, inviting the parliamentary faction of the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union and the Christian Families Union instead of the democrats.
