A reader contacted 15min, warning about what he believes to be a new scam scheme. He was suspicious of an SMS message sent under the name of “Lidl”.

“Hello, scammers have started sending messages pretending to be from ‘Lidl’, nothing like this has happened before,” the reader wrote to the editorial office.
The message he sent advertised “Lidl” promotions. It stated that on July 11–12, Atlantic salmon fillet is sold for 11.49 Eur/kg, a 40% discount applies to selected fresh products with a “Lidl Plus” coupon, and there is a “2+1” offer on paper towels.
At the end of the message, there was also a link which, when clicked, supposedly allows opting out of promotional SMS messages.
At first glance, the message looked similar to a regular marketing announcement from the retail chain, but the reader was suspicious because it was sent not from the sender’s name but from a phone number starting with the Spanish country code +34.

For this reason, 15min contacted “Lidl Lithuania” asking for clarification of the situation.
The company confirmed that the SMS was indeed official and sent on its behalf, but admitted that due to a technical malfunction, customers might have gotten the impression that it was a scam message.
“We sincerely apologize for the caused concern. On Saturday, due to a human error, some messages sent to ‘Lidl’ customers in Lithuania showed a specific phone number instead of the sender name ‘Lidl Plus’. We understand that this and the link used in the message could have caused justified doubts about security.
We are very glad that our customers are so vigilant and thank everyone who reported this. Taking this situation into account, we are refining our communication processes so that in the future our messages will be completely clear and raise no doubts. The message was definitely sent by us, but we acknowledge that its execution should have been better,” commented “Lidl Lithuania”.
