“Yes, I received the invitation a long time ago, I considered it and recently accepted that invitation – I will work as a part-time advisor on cultural issues,” said D.Kuolys.
D.Kuolys served as the first Minister of Culture and Education from 1990 to 1992 after Lithuania restored independence, working in four governments that changed during that time.
He also worked as deputy director of the Lithuanian Literature and Folklore Institute, headed the Civil Society Institute, was an advisor to then-President Valdas Adamkus, and served on the Vilnius City Municipality Council from 2015 to 2019.
He now says he will continue working at Vilnius University, where he is an associate professor at the Faculty of Philology.
The invitation itself, according to D.Kuolys, was unexpected for him.
“My decision was driven by a general concern for the state of the country and the conviction that the attitude ‘the worse, the better’ is inappropriate today. I see that some try to rely on that attitude, but I think it is not a good decision to follow it. That is why I am going to work part-time,” D.Kuolys explained his motives.

He is also one of the founders of the party “Lithuanian List,” established in 2012, and was its leader.
More than a decade ago, D.Kuolys actively participated in protests near the Presidential Palace during the so-called “Garliava story” – it was there that he announced with like-minded people the creation of their own party.
After the Garliava events, another party “Way of Courage” was formed, whose representatives then entered the Seimas.
D.Kuolys explained his relationship with the social democratic line and what he agreed with M.Sinkevičius regarding party matters.
