On Wednesday, the world No. 23 was eliminated from the Roland Garros tournament, losing in the second round 6:4, 6:7(4), 1:6, 3:6 to Thiago Agustin Tirante (ATP-60) from Argentina.
In an interview with the Spanish “Marca,” the tennis player explained what really happened.
“There was no quarrel between us. After my first-round victory against Damir Džumhur, he announced that he was returning to the hotel. About two hours later, I received a message that he was leaving me for good. Soon after, he flew to Miami without informing me or my team. We had a very good relationship, and now he just blocked me and my wife on social media. Until now, I considered him a good person. I wish Mariano no harm, but tennis players who work with him in the future better watch out,” the Spaniard revealed.
The 26-year-old tennis player also revealed that he had heard of similar coach “pranks” before while working with colleagues on the ATP tour – Brandon Nakashima and Laslo Djere.
By the way, in 2005 M. Puerta played in the Roland Garros final, where he lost to the clay court king Rafael Nadal. Four months after the tournament, the Argentine was disqualified for eight months for using banned substances.
This was already the second such offense in the tennis player’s career. Although the sentence was reduced to two years after appeal, he later admitted that he lied during the defense.
