Since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, drone incursions have been frequently recorded in Romania, but none of them had been shot down until Friday.

On Sunday, a Romanian F-16 fighter jet shot down a drone over the Black Sea five minutes after it violated the country’s airspace, Defense Minister Radu Miruta announced on Facebook.
President Nicusor Dan, citing investigation data, stated that the drone shot down on Friday was a “Shahed” model, which the Russian Federation uses in its war of aggression against Ukraine.
He added that investigations into the drones shot down on Saturday and Sunday are still ongoing.
“It is unacceptable and intolerable that the Russian Federation continues to violate Romanian airspace, which is also NATO and European Union airspace,” he wrote on the social network “X”.

Romania has reported dozens of drone incursions during the war in Ukraine.
In May, a drone crashed into an apartment building in the city of Galați, located near the border with Ukraine, injuring two people.
In 2025, the Romanian parliament adopted a law allowing the shooting down of drones violating airspace.
