Karolis Nawrockis told the media that he is “outraged” and suggested “revoking the Order of the White Eagle from President V. Zelensky,” AFP reports.
On May 26, V. Zelensky signed a decree granting the Separate Special Operations Center “North” the title of “UPA heroes” for exemplary combat activity, reports “RBK-Ukraine”.
According to the Polish president, this decision is completely unacceptable and allegedly “shows Ukraine’s unreadiness to join the EU”.
What kind of organization is this
The Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) was an underground military organization active during World War II and afterwards. It aimed to restore an independent Ukrainian state and was subordinate to the leaders of the Ukrainian nationalist organization known as the Banderite faction, from July 1944 – to the Supreme Ukrainian Liberation Council.

According to the Universal Lithuanian Encyclopedia, the first units of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army were formed in the autumn of 1942 in Western Volhynia. They fought against Soviet partisans, Polish underground organizations operating in Western Ukraine, primarily the Home Army, and from February 1943 – against the German occupation administration and armed forces. In the summer of 1943, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army controlled almost all of Volhynia and Polesia; at the end of 1943–early 1944, the army had about 40,000 soldiers.
After the USSR army occupied Ukraine in 1944, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army operated behind its lines, and from autumn – split into smaller partisan units.
