"Plans A, B, and C": Business continuity system approved at Klaipėda port directorate

„The uninterrupted operation of the Klaipėda port is a vital task for all of us. We constantly work to ensure that such a scenario does not occur under any circumstances – neither by showing force to nature, nor by raising heads against hostile forces, nor when facing cyber threats. In the face of a crisis, we must avoid confusion, know precisely, and have tested and refined operational algorithms. The implemented and ISO 22301 international standard certified business continuity management system proves that a great and meticulous job has already been done. However, we also understand that this path is endless – we must continuously improve our plans and operational schemes and have several backup options,” says Algis Latakas, General Director of the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority.

The business continuity management system is like a very specific action plan on how to act in case of any incident disrupting the Port Authority’s operations or when such a threat arises. The system covers not only incident response actions but also decisions that help ensure that the most important functions of the Port Authority are not interrupted during an incident.

The system, which has strengthened the reliability of the Klaipėda Port Authority’s operations, was implemented within a year. The company “Adwisery,” which won the tender, started work in July last year. First, the most important functions of the Port Authority were assessed, possible threats to their continuity identified, and procedures and plans prepared on how to act in such cases to restore them as quickly as possible. This year, the system was evaluated according to the requirements of the international ISO 22301 standard and recognized as compliant. The certification audit was conducted by the company “Gcert Baltic.”

The ISO 22301 certificate awarded to the Port Authority is a significant recognition of the work done, but at the same time, it is a long-term commitment to improve in the future. The system will be regularly reviewed, tested, and improved, taking into account changes in the organization’s activities, environment, risks, and legal requirements.

The Klaipėda Port Authority ensures shipping safety in the port around the clock, continuously monitors the port, coordinates actions during incidents, so its smooth and resilient operation is essential for the safe and uninterrupted work of the entire Klaipėda port. Disrupted operations of the Klaipėda port would affect logistics chains important to the entire country.
