The “Legio” program is supported by 11 countries, but it is mainly carried out by soldiers of the elite mechanized infantry battalion “Telemark” of the Norwegian army. This battalion has incorporated certain aspects of Viking culture into its identity.

Major John, S3 operations officer responsible for coordinating the entire training operation, told journalists that “Telemark” pays great attention not only to skill development but also to fostering the “warrior mentality.” According to him, this allows soldiers to fight and “thrive in harsh conditions.”
“We draw this warrior mentality from our Viking heritage, and Viking culture is very important to us,” says the major.

The publication notes that the “Telemark” battalion has participated in combat missions in the Balkans, Afghanistan, and Iraq.
Some Ukrainian soldiers attending the training already have combat experience. Norwegian instructors told journalists that this training is essentially an exchange, during which Ukraine’s combat experience influences what its NATO partners teach.
