It is stated that so far Lithuania has coordinated 14 professional internships for the country’s healthcare specialists in Ukraine, and for the first time, with the participation of specialists from Latvia and Estonia, the readiness of the Baltic states to act during military conflict and other large-scale crises is being strengthened.
Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius, pleased with the commitment of the medics, assures that help in Ukraine is very much needed, and the network of medical institutions constantly operates under the challenging conditions of war.
“Lithuania shows unifying leadership by bringing together specialists from all three Baltic countries for this mission, and I have no doubt that the experience gained from Ukrainian colleagues will strengthen the preparedness of our health systems for emergencies,” he is quoted as saying in the statement.
Professional internships for healthcare specialists in Ukraine are organized to strengthen the preparedness of the Lithuanian health system to operate during war and other emergency situations.
The internships take place in Ukrainian medical institutions that have accumulated practical experience in treating soldiers and civilians wounded during the war and organizing medical response under war conditions.
During them, specialists will gain practical knowledge of treating war injuries, managing mass casualties, patient evacuation, hospital operations organization, and principles of medical response.

It is stated that the practical experience gained will be applied to strengthen the preparedness of the Lithuanian health system, improve specialist training, training programs, medical institution readiness, and emergency management procedures.
According to Deputy Minister of Health Skirmantas Krunkaitis, the experience accumulated by the medics of the country fighting against Russian aggression is invaluable for all countries strengthening crisis preparedness.
“These professional internships allow our specialists to learn in real conditions and bring back knowledge to Lithuania that cannot be acquired through theoretical training alone. It is especially important that today we begin this path together with colleagues from Latvia and Estonia – strengthening not only each country’s health system but also the overall readiness of the Baltic region to act in the most challenging circumstances,” he said.
So far, 78 specialists have participated in 14 professional internships for Lithuanian healthcare specialists in Ukraine coordinated by the Ministry of Health and the Emergency Health Situations Center (EESC).
By March 2029, it is planned to train 120 Lithuanian healthcare specialists in Ukraine.
“These internships are an exceptional opportunity for us to learn from a country facing the greatest challenges to its health system every day. The task of the ESSC is to ensure that this experience does not remain the knowledge of individual specialists but strengthens the preparedness of the entire Lithuanian health system,” said the center’s director Audronė Sviklaitė.
